Turner joy at Derby nod

Hayley Turner has admitted she is “chuffed” after being confirmed for the ride of 66/1 antepost shot Cavaleiro in the Investec Derby next month at Epsom.

Turner will become just the second woman ever to ride in the Derby when she lines up on Marcus Tregoning’s charge in the Classic on June 2.

Turner has two Group One wins to her name, landing the July Cup on Dream Ahead and the Nunthorpe on Margot Did last season, and follows in the footsteps of Alex Greaves – the only woman to have previously ridden in the Derby – when she rode Portuguese Lil in 1996.

“I just got a call from Mr Tregoning and he said I could ride the horse for Mr Guy Brooks in the Derby, so that was very kind of him,” a delighted Turner said after the news was revealed.

“I won on him and then he won the Haynes, Hanson & Clark for Richard Mullen when I was off injured.

“He ran a good race around Lingfield on the all-weather, which probably wasn’t ideal, and it’s really nice to have a ride in the race.”

Turner is looking forward to the challenge, for which Camelot is the current 4/5 favourite ahead of Bonfire in the antepost market at 5/1.

“I suppose for any jockey it’s nice to have a ride in the Derby, male or female, so obviously I’m thrilled,” she added on Racing UK.

“I’m chuffed with it. I don’t hide my enthusiasm about the whole thing at all.”
