Sari stuns rivals

Luca CumaniIf you’re looking for a horse to follow for the rest of the Flat season you could do far worse than stick with Luca Cumani’s Silk Sari, a tremendously impressive winner in Group 2 company at Doncaster on Thursday.

No more than a fair handicapper as recently as May this year, the four-year-old daughter of Dalakhani has positively blossomed this summer, winning a 12-furlong Doncaster handicap before finishing a much improved third in the Group 3 Pinnacle Stakes at Haydock.

Her only blip was when fifth in the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks back at the same track in July, but she regained the winning habit when landing the listed Chalice Stakes at Newbury in August.

Sent off an 8/1 shot for the Group 2 DFS Park Hill Stakes over the St Leger course and distance, it was hard to believe just how easily Andrea Atzeni’s mount travelled throughout the contest before being set alight inside the final quarter-mile.

She soon led and pulled readily clear of smart opposition to win eased down by five lengths.

“I must say I’m surprised,” winning trainer Cumani admitted to journalists in the winners’ enclosure.

“I thought she would run well – she’s been in excellent form – but winning like that was unexpected. There’s a mile and five Group race [Prix de Royallieu] on Arc weekend for fillies; she might go for that. She’s been great for the family. It’s a great success.”

Meanwhile on Saturday at Doncaster, Kingston Hill is 5/2 to come out on top in the St Leger, with Snow Sky at 5/1 to seal the win.
