Richard Hughes says he “can’t see any reason” why Dick Turpin (5/1 to win York 15:25) won’t stay the trip and claim victory in Tuesday’s Juddmonte International Stakes at York.
The Group One race is the highlight of day one of the Ebor Festival and the Richard Hannon-trained charge is seen as many as the horse to beat.
Hughes will ride the three-year-old at the Knavesmire, after owner John Manley forked out £50,000 to add his colt to the list of runners.
The jockey is in confident mood despite Dick Turpin going into the unknown, having not previously run over this distance, with his form looking strong.
Hughes said: “I can’t wait to ride him. It will be interesting to see how he gets on over a mile and quarter. He wants a bit of cut in the ground ideally, but maybe that could stretch his stamina further.”
One of his main rivals will be the Aidan O’Brien-trained Rip Van Winkle (15/8), who was just pipped to back-to-back Sussex Stakes victories.
O’Brien, whose Starspangledbanner is 2/1f with Betfred to win 2010 Nunthorpe Stakes, says “everything has been good” with his charge this year and that his horse has “always shown loads of speed”.
