Cape Blanco claims Irish win

cape blanco 300x194 Cape Blanco claims Irish winAidan O’Brien celebrated his sixth victory Tattersalls Millions Irish Champion Stakes, as Cape Blanco (6/1 Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe ant post market) dominated proceedings in Leopardstown.

The three-year-old made all the running over the mile and quarter trip and easily saw off his rivals to land his five victory in seven starts.

The Irish derby winner, who claimed the Dante Stakes back in May, was ridden to a five and a half length win by jockey Seamie Heffernan.

Stablemate Rip Van Winkle (10/1 to win Breeders Cup Classic) finished second with Henry Cecil’s Twice Over, the Coral-eclipse winner, was back in third.

O’Brien, whose Beethoven finished fourth, was delighted with the winner, who he described as a “progressing and maturing” horse.

The trainer was also happy with Rip Van Winkle, who he felt “ran a great race” as a horse that is really “a miler that gets 10 furlongs”.

Cecil said Twice Over “didn’t seem to quite pick up as expected” but admitted that he was unlikely to have beaten the winner anyway.
