Arc favourite Sea The Moon in warm-up race

Horse3719979The star German three-year-old colt Sea The Moon puts his reputation on the line on Sunday afternoon at Baden Baden and nothing less than a win will maintain his position as favourite for next month’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

The Marcus Klug-trained son of the great Sea The Stars is unbeaten in all four career starts, including last time out when he set the international racing world alight when winning the Group 1 German Derby, run at Hamburg, by a stunning 11 length – he was value for much further.

That victory elevated the three-year-old to ante-post favouritism for Europe’s premier middle-distance contest, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in October, a race for which he remains the current 4/1 favourite (with Betfred) ahead of last year’s brilliant winner, the French-trained Treve (5/1).

With his likely Arc rider Christophe Soumillon on duty in France in Sunday, Marco Demuro has been called up to partner Sea The Moon and has confirmed that the leading French jockey has already been on the phone with some advice on how to ride the star German performer.

“Christophe has told me not to give him a hard race, and [said that] a repeat of what he did in the last race will be enough,” Demuro told the Racing Post. “This time they will have a pacemaker and I’ll follow him until we reach the straight.

I was told last week that because I have the same agent as Christophe – and there was a chance he couldn’t ride – I might be asked,” said Demuro. “Trainer Markus Klug did ask me, and of course I said, ‘Yes.'”
