Neptune Collonges springs National surprise

Bet on horse racingOutsider Neptune Collonges produced a major shock on Saturday by winning the John Smith’s Grand National to give Paul Nicholls his first victory as a trainer at the famous Aintree race.

The 11-year-old went off as a serious outsider at 33/1, but was ridden excellently by jockey Daryl Jacob who kept him in the running throughout the race and timed his move to perfection.

The John Hales grey was one of several horses in with a chance of victory at the final turn but he made his move late on, catching Sunnyhillboy in the last few yards before pipping him at the post. The race went down to a photo finish.

Joint favourite Seabass rode a strong race under Kate Walsh but could only manage a third place finish, while Cappa Bleu came through to take fourth.

Compliance took fifth spot while last year’s winner Ballabriggs battled back from a disappointing start to come through to finish sixth.

Speaking after his outstanding win, Jacob couldn’t contain his delight.

Overcome with emotion, he said: “You can’t beat this. I was on a tough horse and I said to Paul that one day I would ride you a National winner.

“That was two years ago and now I’ve done it.”
