Punters face weekend wait on Kauto Star

Bet on horse racingPunters will find out on Monday as to whether or not Kauto Star will compete in the Betfred Gold Cup, owner Clive Smith has revealed.

The two-time champion suffered a fall while schooling 13 days ago and there have been fears over his involvement in the Gold Cup, with trainer Paul Nicholls admitting Kauto Star had just a ’50-50′ chance of bidding for a third title.

However, Smith feels the 12-year-old is showing signs of getting back to normal, but a decision on whether or not he will be involved will not be announced until Monday – the day before the Cheltenham Festival begins.

“He’s coming along nicely now and is almost back to normal,” Smith said. “We’re nearly there, I think.

“The decision on whether he runs or not will be made on Monday, not Friday. Paul has said that he will school him on the grass gallops at home, as he has done every year before Cheltenham, and after he’s done that, the decision will be announced.”

Kauto Star is priced at 4/1 to win the Betfred Gold Cup, which takes place on March 16, the current favourite is defending champion Long Run who is available at 13/8.

Burton Port and Grands Crus are both 6/1, while Midnight Chase and Synchronised are both 10/1 to emerge victorious in the showpiece event.
