Big two for Gold Cup showdown

Bet on horse racingKauto Star has been named among the 15 runners for Friday’s Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup after recovering from injury (Kauto Star 7/2 Gold Cup Winner).

He will battle it out with defending champion Long Run, who is the 7/4 favourite to take the Blue Riband event once more.

Kauto Star was rated as just ’50-50′ by trainer Paul Nicholls following his schooling fall, but the 2007 and 2009 winner will line up on the final day of the Festival to renew his rivalry with Long Run.

Connections are upbeat about his chances after victories over Long Run at Haydock and Kempton Park although it remains to be seen how he will travel given the recent incident.

Nicholls will also saddle last-year’s fifth What A Friend (20/1), while Henderson’s other interest will be Burton Port (7/1).

The Irish challenge will be led by Willie Mullins’ duo Quel Esprit and The Midnight Club, whilst Mouse Morris will saddle China Rock.

Jonjo O’Neill’s Synchronised will take his place in the field after winning the Lexus Chase on his last outing, while Mark Bradstock’s charge Carruthers and Midnight Chase, trained by Neil Mulholland, will also line up at Prestbury Park.

The field is completed by Donald McCain’s Weird Al, Paul Webber’s Time For Rupert, Nick Williams’ Diamond Harry, George Charlton’s Knockara Beau and David Bridgwater’s The Giant Bolster.

There were concerns over the ground, and Tuesday’s fatalities will certainly have made connections of the top horses take note, but everything is set fair for a cracking race on Friday with the big two sure to be in the thick of the action.
