Gulbis faces battle in first ATP final

PA 8410408 300x225 Gulbis faces battle in first ATP finalErnests Gulbis (5/4 to win on match coupon) is not getting too carried away with the fact he could win his first ever ATP title at the Delray Beach International Championships.

The Latvian world number 72 is due to take on Ivo Karlovic (8/13 to win on match coupon) in the final in Florida after he beat Jarkko Nieminen in the semi-finals and the second seed was comfortable beating Mardy Fish in the other last four clash.

Gulbis’s victory over Nieminen was interrupted for almost three hours by rain but he did impress throughout by not facing one break point during the tie and firing seven aces past his opponent.

The 22-year-old said it felt “really good” to make his first ATP Tour final but will face a much tougher task against Karlovic (6/4 to win 2-0 on match coupon) as his serve helped him dominate the semi-final against Fish.

Gulbis said: “It’s a lot of (rankings) points and I don’t have points to defend until the end of the year, so I can make a move in the rankings.

“I am mentally stronger… I am playing smarter. I warmed up well. I was ready from the first point and I stayed aggressive. I was thinking mentally that I was going on court to win.”
