Woods relishing links test

The 8/1 favourite, Tiger Woods, is relishing the challenges of links golf ahead of the Open Championship and has revealed it is his “favourite major championship”.

The former world number one has been through a lean time of late and after looking a certainty to surpass Jack Nicklaus’ major haul of 18 titles a couple of years ago, many experts thought Woods would never recover his best form.

However, he has enjoyed a real resurgence this year, winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Memorial Tournament and AT&T National to give himself real confidence going into a tournament he was won three times.

Woods also admits the unique challenges that links golf brings makes it all the more interesting while recent weather conditions may also throw up one or two more surprises.

“You can have so many different weather conditions. You just don’t know,” Woods said.

“That’s one of the unique things about the British Open and why it’s my favourite major championship.

“It’s the only tournament besides the sandbelt courses in Australia that we can actually use the ground as a friend and bounce the ball into the greens.

“Modern golf is all up in the air.”

Woods missed the cut in his last outing at the Greenbrier Classic but he remains the clear Open favourite, with Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Luke Donald all priced at 16/1 ahead of Padraig Harrington at 18/1.
