Patience the key for Rory

Rory McIlroy could be forgiven for going out all guns blazing at the Masters after his dramatic collapse last year (The Masters outright – Rory McIlroy 11/2).

The Northern Irishman blew his chances on the final day 12 months ago in Augusta with a final round of 80.

It seemed as if nerves may be affecting the US Open champion on his return to Augusta as he started this year’s event with a double-bogey.

However, the world number two held his nerve and finished the day one-under, thanks to birdies on the 17th and 18th, and McIlroy feels his patience has paid off.

“It was really good considering how I played,” said the 22-year-old. “I think my perseverance and patience paid off with those two threes at the end.”

Lee Westwood led on day one way with a five-under-par 67 as he seeks his first Major title, one shot ahead of South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen in second place (The Masters outright – Lee Westwood 4/1).
