Mickelson new favourite in Augusta

Bet on golfBetfred have installed Phil Mickelson as the 11/8 favourite for the Masters after he carded a third-round 65 to close to within one shot of leader Peter Hanson.

After making nine straight pars on his front nine, he hit four birdies and an eagle on the way in to end the day on eight-under as he chases a fourth Green Jacket in nine years.

By contrast, Sweden’s Hanson (4/1 Masters in-play) has yet to win a major, with a seventh place at last year’s US Open his best performance to date.

However, he could be set to break his duck here after closing his third round with back-to-back birdies – his seventh and eighth of the round – to close the day in front on nine-under.

Former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen (11/2) was tied with Mickelson heading to the 18th hole but he missed the green from the middle of the fairway, with the bogey five leaving him in the clubhouse a shot back in third.

Left-hander Bubba Watson (8/1) carded a 69 to close in fourth on six-under with Matt Kuchar a shot further back.

Padraig Harrington (28/1) and Lee Westwood (20/1) – who led after the first round – are still in contention on four under but Rory McIlroy struggled.

He failed to recover from a poor start, taking six at the first, and his eventual 77 left him well off the pace on one over, with Betfred pushing his odds out to 150/1.

Tiger Woods’ woes continued, carding a level-par 72 to remain 12 shots off the leader on three over.
