Sutton slams Team USA

Tom Watson and Paul McGinleyFormer Ryder Cup captain Hal Sutton has lashed out at the players who featured for Team USA and says their mentality must change if they are to enjoy success in the coming years (USA 11/10 – 2016 Ryder Cup outright).

Sutton – who captained Team USA in 2004 in a non-playing role – believes that many of the players within the ranks should take the blame for 2014’s poor outing – in which they were hammered by Team Europe by 18.5 points to 9.5 – rather than captain Tom Watson.

“I dare say that nobody who has ever played on a Ryder Cup team has thought that every decision made by the captain was right,” said Sutton.

“I just think we’re looking to blame the wrong folks. The players should go there with one mission in mind, to play well because that’s all they have control over.

“To me, when you start blaming the captain you’re looking for excuses already,” added Sutton.

Team Europe are the early favourites for success in 2016 at 10/11 and it seems – in Sutton’s view at least – that Europe will again triumph unless the USA players adjust their mentality and concentrate on their own performances.
