Rumford seeks Euro hat-trick

A worn-out Brett Rumford is aiming to emulate the late, great Seve Ballesteros with a third consecutive European Tour title at this week’s Volvo World Match Play Championship (Rumford 25/1 – Tournament Outright).
The 35-year-old bounced back from missing the cut at the Trophee Hassan II to take the Ballantine’s Championship in South Korea and then followed that up with victory at the Volvo China Open.

He is now in Bulgaria for the Match Play event and has been grouped with Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Jamie Donaldson in the ‘Gary Player Group’ over the first two days of the event (Fernandez-Castano 6/4, Rumford 7/4, Donaldson 2/1 – Group Winner).
The top two in the group after the first two days will then advance to the round of 16, with the winners playing a second match on Saturday to progress to Sunday’s semi-finals.

The winners of the last-four encounter will play the final on Sunday afternoon at the spectacular Thracian Cliffs Golf Club and so it is an intense and physically draining event for those lucky enough to make it all the way.

Rumford is hoping to be in the thick of the action on Sunday and win his third straight European Tour title to match the feat of the legendary Spaniard, who won tournaments in Ireland, Monte Carlo and Spain back in 1986.

But the Australian admits that fatigue might be a factor as he has racked up thousands of air miles in recent weeks with sleep at a premium.

“This week has just been about trying to recover and get the stamina to be able to take on 36 holes a day for the duration of the event hopefully, if I can make it that far,” he said.
