Rose – I can challenge McIlroy

Justin RoseJustin Rose (16/1 – US PGA Championship outright) believes he could be the man to challenge in-form Rory McIlroy at this week’s US PGA Championship at Valhalla.

After a difficult 2013 campaign when he struggled to adapt after switching club manufacturers, Northern Irishman McIlroy has bounced back in recent months and is currently in the form of his life, winning his last two tournaments – the Open and the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational – to surge back to the top of the world rankings.

It means McIlroy (9/2 favourite – US PGA Championship outright) is the man fancied to make it three in a row this week in Kentucky and a number of the field have already admitted they feel that finishing one shot ahead of the 25-year-old will give them an excellent chance of lifting the Wanamaker Trophy on Sunday.

Rose goes into the event in good form having finished in a tie for fourth at Firestone and, despite having a major to his name after winning the 2013 US Open, does not have as much pressure on him this week due to the attention being paid to the world number one.

The Englishman admits he is feeling quietly confident about his chances at Valhalla and is positive that he can be the man to win the final major of the year.

“I feel like my form is great and I have every chance this week,” Rose told reporters. “Everyone would like to finish one ahead of Rory, and I think it is a great opportunity.

“I am certainly playing well enough to give it a run this week. Being under the radar is never a bad thing.”
