Rose gets thorny opener

Justin Rose has been paired alongside fellow Englishman Robert Rock (Rose 8/11, Rock 13/8, Tie 6/1 1st Round Matches) in a group clash at this week’s Volvo World Match Play Championship in Spain.

The format for the tournament at Finca Cortesin near Marbella has changed this year as the best-ranked 16 players have been seeded for the group stage with the remaining eight of the 24-strong field being drawn into the groups on Tuesday.

The leading two players from the eight groups of three will go through to the knockout phase after facing each other in round-robin games.

World number nine, Germany’s Martin Kaymer (7/1 fav Tournament Outright), is the highest ranked player at the tournament, and he will face Spaniard Rafael Cabrera-Bello.

There is a mouth-watering all Spanish clash between Sergio Garcia and Alvaro Quiros (Garcia 10/11, Quiros 5/4, Tie 6/1 1st Round Matches), while defending champion Ian Poulter will go up against Australian John Senden in his group.
