Rory feels in good shape

Rory McIlroyRory McIlroy (12/1f to win Open Championship) says he is in “good shape” ahead of the Open Championship next week and is calling on past experience to turn his form on links courses around.

McIlroy was tied third at the Open in 2010 but has since been disappointing in the tournament, with his struggles topped off last year when he failed to make the cut after a disastrous opening-round 79.

It is a similar story with the Northern Irishman’s current form. After winning the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in May, he finished 23rd at the US Open in June and missed the cut at his home Irish Open.

However, McIlroy showed glimpses of his best at Royal Aberdeen in the Scottish Open earlier this week, carding a new course-record 64 and driving the green at the 436-yard 13th before a shock second-round total of seven-over.

It is the first time the world number eight has played the Scottish Open in five years as he tries to get more links golf under his belt ahead of the Open at Royal Liverpool next week.

And while McIlroy admits he feels more comfortable at St Andrews, he believes he is well-prepared and wants to put an end to his struggles with links golf.

“I always felt the best chance for me to win an Open Championship was at St Andrews just because of how comfortable I feel on that golf course,” McIlroy told Sky Sports News.

“Playing a little bit more links golf before the Open will definitely help.

“I feel like my game is in good shape and I feel like I’m playing well enough that I can contend.

“It’s not like I haven’t played well on links courses before. I’ve got a great amateur career on links courses, I’ve shot some really good numbers. So I can play it, the last few years just haven’t gone my way.

“Hopefully this is the year where I can turn that around.”

Defending champion Phil Mickelson is 22/1 to win the Open while US Open winner Martin Kaymer is the second favourite at 14/1.
