Quiros eyes return to success

Golf - 2014 BMW PGA Championship - Day Four - Wentworth Golf ClubAlvaro Quiros (66/1 – Tournament Outright) feels he could have a good week at the Portugal Masters, a tournament he really looks forward to on the European Tour.

The Spaniard won this week’s event back in 2008, with a three-shot victory, and although his recent form has been patchy he has high hopes of going well in Villamoura.

Quiros (55/1 – First Round Leader) has not won on the Tour since 2011, a year when he collected two titles, and has seen his world ranking slip back to 209.

But there have been signs of a change in fortunes, highlighted by a top-20 finish at the Open D’Italia at the end of August. Earlier in the season, he recorded three top-ten finishes and the 31-year-old remains upbeat.

Quiros said: “It’s always a special week because I consider it as a very good golf tournament and good people. The golf course is in good shape normally and perfect weather, and that helps a lot to start with a good feeling.”

The man from Cadiz started last year’s event with a stunning six-under-par 65, but eventually finished in a tie for 22nd after a disappointing final round 74.

Quiros will play his opening two rounds alongside winning European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, as well as American Peter Uihlein. The three-ball tee-off their first rounds on the tenth hole, at 8:40am (1st Round Three Ball Betting – Uihlein 11/10, Quiros 6/4, McGinley 10/3).
