McIlroy in touch in Tour Championship

Rory McIlroyRory McIlroy sits handily-placed just three shots off leading duo Billy Horschel and Chris Kirk after the first round at the Tour Championship (McIlroy 9/2 In-Play Winner) at East Lake in Atlanta.

The 25-year-old Northern Irishman and world number one is determined to round off a successful campaign on a high note by winning the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup title which also brings with it a £6million bonus.

McIlroy had a mixed round as he fired four birdies and three bogeys to go out in 34 and came back in 35, which leaves him behind Horschel and Kirk who hit bogey-free rounds of 66.

“Regardless of whatever is at stake in terms of prize money, I would just like to win the FedEx Cup,” he said.

“With the year that I’ve had I really want to finish it off well.”

However Horschel (13/2 In-Play), who is in second place in the FedEx Cup standings after last week’s BMW Championship triumph and aware that a win in this tournament would be enough for him to claim the title, feels he has hit his peak form at the right time.

“My confidence feels pretty high out there,” said Horschel. “Right now the way I’m feeling I feel like every round is going to be a great round for me. I feel  like my swing’s good, I’m trying to slow the tempo down a little bit from last week.

“I love being in contention, it’s what every players plays for and it’s been great to be in there the last couple of weeks. We’re all competitive and when you get in contention you want to stay there.”

In addition to holding off Kirk and McIlroy, Horschel also has a four-man group of Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Jason Day and Patrick Reed just one shot off his joint-lead lead on three-under going into the second round later on Friday.
