Harmon hails great Scott

Coach Butch Harmon believes Adam Scott (22/1 Open Championship outright) can go on to be a real force in major competitions, after he broke his duck by winning the Masters on Sunday.

The 32-year-old became the first Australian ever to earn the Green Jacket at Augusta, as he managed to see off the challenge of fellow Aussie Jason Day (50/1 Open Championship outright) and then Argentine Angel Cabrera in a two-way sudden death playoff in Georgia.

Having previously finished in the top three in the Masters, the US Open and the Open Championship, Scott has been thereabouts on a few occasions.

But having got over the line at Augusta on Sunday to claim his first major win, and Harmon, who has worked with Scott on his game, believes the Adelaide-born golfer can claim many more titles.

He said: “It’s been a long time coming and we’ve talked for a long time about ‘is he the best player that’s never won a major’ – well he’s not anymore.

“To win major championships you have to step up to the plate when the time demands. Adam was so close so many times but if you’ve learned from things you’ve gone through in the past it makes you stronger.

“It looked like he had it at Lytham (Open Championship) and it slipped away but now he’s got one major he could go on and win a lot.”
