Luiten eager to maintain form

Joost LuitenJoost Luiten (5/6 to win) admitted he was pleased with his form as he took a two-shot lead at the ISPS Handa Wales Open at Celtic Manor.

Luiten carded a six-under-par third round 65 on Saturday to give himself the advantage going into the final round. He had led at the halfway stage and extended his lead, but must be wary of Ireland’s Shane Lowry (10/3 to win the Wales Open), who is two shots further back on 12 under.

Both players flew out of the blocks at the start of the day as they made birdies early on in their round. However, Lowry’s low scoring took a hit when he claimed 12 consecutive pars while Luiten birdied his last four holes.

The Dutchman was fourth in the Italian Open earlier this season and fifth in the KLM Open last week and the 28-year-old insists he is just happy with his game at present.

He said: “I’m just happy that I’m playing good again and just want to keep going again.

“I’m happy with a good score today. I played solid, consistent, hit a lot of greens and holed some nice putts to start with. I didn’t really make a lot in the middle part, but came back strong at the end with three birdies on the last four, and I’m happy.

“You’re in the last group, the greens are not as good as in the morning maybe and you just have to be patient out on the greens. They are quite soft and you have to create chances every hole and they will go in eventually and luckily it did for me at the end.”
