Garcia tipped to make impact

Sergio GarciaJose Maria Olazabal is confident that Sergio Garcia will be able to move on from a series of near misses to shine at the upcoming Ryder Cup (Garcia 13/2 Top European).

Garcia qualified automatically for Paul McGinley’s European dozen and will line up at Gleneagles between September 26-28 as the hosts look to defend their title and make it three wins in a row (Europe 4/6, USA 13/8, tie 9/1 Match Prices).

The Spaniard has enjoyed a superb season to date, with victory in the European Tour’s Commercialbank Qatar Masters early in his campaign.

Eight more top-10 finishes have followed, including a share of second place at the Open Championship, but he has failed to get over the line in recent times and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory on a couple of occasions.

He blew a chance of winning the PGA Tour’s BMW Championship on Sunday night in Denver by triple-bogeying the penultimate hole, with former golfer and current outspoken commentator Johnny Miller labelling him a ‘choker’.

And it is not the first time that the 34-year-old has been tagged as a ‘nearly man’ as he has secured 19 top-10s in the majors but has yet to lift one of the big-four trophies.

The crowd have sometimes been known to get to Garcia and he does appear to have buckled under pressure at times, but compatriot Olazabal, who will be close by in Scotland as one of McGinley’s assistants, feels that will not be the case at the end of September.

“He’s a person who needs to feel love around him and at a Ryder Cup he has a lot of that,” he said. “He thrives at the Ryder Cup. He really enjoys that week.”
