Age no barrier for Jimenez

Miguel Angel JimenezMiguel Angel Jimenez is ready to roll back the years as he looks to defend his Hong Kong Open title and lift the trophy for the fifth time (Jimenez 12/1 fav Tournament outright).

The 50-year-old is now in the Far East for the latest European Tour event and shows no signs of slowing down despite being eligible for the Seniors Tour.

The Spaniard has won 21 European Tour events during his illustrious career and four of them have been in the former British colony, with victory in 2004, 2007 and in each of the last two years.

He is therefore chasing a third consecutive victory at Hong Kong Golf Club which would make him only the fourth man after Tiger Woods, Tom Watson and Bernhard Langer to win a European Tour event five times or more.

And the popular veteran, who has revealed that he would like to captain the European Ryder Cup team at Hazeltine in 2016, admits he has always felt comfortable playing in the New Territories.

“It always feels good to come back to Hong Kong,” he said. “It is one of my favourite places in the world and it feels like coming home in some ways.”

Jimenez already has one win under his belt this season, with victory in the Open de Espana, but he has struggled of late with four missed cuts and nothing better than a 35th-place finish in his last eight events.

But he will not be up against the strongest of fields this week, with Ernie Els (14/1) and Nicolas Colsaerts (16/1) the only real ‘names’ in the line-up.

And Jimenez has made it clear that, despite being the wrong side of 50, he is determined to give it a real go and challenge for the title on Sunday.

“I might be getting older but I still feel like I can keep competing on tour to give myself chances to win tournaments, and as long as I feel like this then I will keep playing,” he added. “I would love to win this tournament for the fifth time.”
