Garcia sees positive signs

SergioGarcia16485948Sergio Garcia admits his game is coming together at the right time as he takes a one-shot lead into round three of the BMW Championship (Garcia 5/2 In-Play Winner).

The Spaniard has enjoyed an excellent season but has seen his form tail off slightly in his past two events, with a disappointing display in the US PGA Championship and at The Barclays.

But he carded a sensational six-under par 64 to add to his opening 68 in Denver on Friday to sit at the top of the leaderboard at the halfway stage of the FedEx Cup’s penultimate tournament.

The 34-year-old is one stroke clear of America’s Ryan Palmer (9/1), who matched Garcia’s 64 on Friday, with world number one Rory McIlroy (7/4) securing three late birdies in his second round to join Billy Horschel (11/1) on -6 in share of third place.

There are still many big names in with a shout of taking the title, with Bubba Watson (20/1), Graham DeLaet (33/1) and Hideki Matsuyama (33/1) all sitting on four-under par with 36 holes to go, while star trio Henrik Stenson (20/1), Adam Scott (22/1) and Jordan Spieth (25/1) are one shot further back.

But it is all about Garcia at present and the Swiss resident is hoping to continue his resurgence over the weekend.

“I think the important thing is for me to keep feeling better,” he told Sky Sports. “US PGA and Barclays I didn’t feel great – the way I played.”

There is just one more FedEx Cup play-off event to come, with the carrot of a $10m bonus for the overall winner, but Garcia admits that he already has his mind on another event set to take place at Gleneagles later this month (Europe 4/6, USA 13/8, tie 9/1 Ryder Cup Outright).

“This week, I’ve hit some good shots but I’ve hit some that I don’t like to hit so I want to kind of build up on this bit of momentum, and make sure that I’m where I need to be for the Ryder Cup,” he added.
