Chelsea (1/7 in the match betting) boss Carlo Ancelotti has revealed he will blood his youngsters in Tuesday night’s Champions League clash against MSK Zilina (14/1 to win, 7/1 the draw) at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues have John Terry sidelined for some time due to a long-standing nerve problem, while Frank Lampard is also ruled out with a leg injury.
Alex is set to have knee surgery at some point and will not be risked, with Chelsea already assured of progression, while Michael Essien is unavailable with a toe injury.
The injury list has opened the door for youngsters Jeffrey Bruma, who will line up in defence, and Josh McEachran, who earns his first start having already appeared in all four group games to date as a substitute.
“Alex, I want to protect,” said Ancelotti. “We’ve postponed the surgery because his reaction was very good after the weekend.
“He won’t be involved. We want to protect him. Midfielder Michael Essien is not able to play because he’s injured. He has a swollen toe.
“Bruma will play from the beginning, and also McEachran. Bruma at centre-back and McEachran as a holding midfielder.
“It is the time for McEachran to play. He’s shown a good attitude and personality. It’s a good moment for him. It’s the time for him to have his chance.”
Chelsea (4/1 to win Champions League) have lost three of their last four games but need just one point from their remaining two games in Europe, the last of which is away at Marseille, to confirm their progression as Group F winners.
