Wenger wants star to sign

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted he is eager to see the club’s skipper Robin van Persie sign a contract extension with the north London outfit in the immediate future (11/4 Arsenal – Premier League top-4 finish).

The Netherlands international insisted he was committed to the club in the match-day programme ahead of the 2-1 victory over Sunderland on Sunday.

It was van Persie who produced two moments of magic to bag the two goals that gave Wenger’s men a hard-fought victory over a resilient Black Cats side.

After such an impressive performance, attentions have turned to the future of the striker and whether he will sign a new deal at the Emirates.

Wenger has admitted he is keen to see the club’s top scorer this season stay with the Gunners (20/1 Champions League outright) for many more years to come.

He told the club’s official website: “The ideal situation is that he extends his contract but if he doesn’t you have to respect that.

“You know what is important is that he plays like he plays because we are all here to see special football players and he is a special football player.”
