Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that Wayne Rooney could be set for a spell on the sidelines after he injured his ankle in Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich (Bayern 11/1 to qualify).
The England international landed awkwardly on his ankle in injury time at the Allianz Arena to round off a bad night for United, who threw away a one goal lead with only moments remaining.
Rooney had struck first within two minutes before a Franck Ribery free-kick and Ivica Olic’s stoppage time winner gave the German side the advantage heading into next week’s second leg.
United are now 4/1 to win the Champions League after last night’s defeat but will be more concerned about the fitness of Rooney heading into the big game against Chelsea on Saturday.
The Blues (7/4 to beat United in the match betting) will head to Old Trafford at the weekend looking to overhaul Ferguson’s men at the top of the league and take what could be a crucial two point lead with just five games to go after Saturday.
Having been spotted leaving the ground on crutches after Tuesday night’s game Rooney’s participation in the match looks to be in doubt, and Ferguson admits he is unsure whether his star man will be fit for the visit of Chelsea.
He has got a kick to the ankle, we will just have to wait and see tomorrow (Wednesday),” said Ferguson.
“Hopefully it’s not too serious. He may be doubtful for Saturday but we don’t know, it’s too early to say.”
