Blackburn have confirmed their Carling Cup tie against Peterborough on Tuesday will go ahead despite an outbreak of swine flu at the club.
Rovers have revealed that both David Dunn and Chris Samba were forced to miss Saturday’s Premier League game against Chelsea at the weekend, in which Blackburn were soundly beaten 5-0, because of the ‘flu bug.
Rovers are favourites to see off their supposedly inferior opponents (Blackburn 4/5, Posh 7/2, the draw 5/2 in the match betting) but a weakened side could help Peterborough’s chances of an upset.
And there are fears that other members of Sam Allardyce’s squad could fall ill, with several said to be showing similar symptoms.
There had been suggestions that the game against Championship outfit Peterborough may have to be postponed but Rovers official now say that is not the case.
Rovers club secretary Andrew Pincher said: “There has been speculation in the national media following confirmation of sickness within the camp, but we can reassure all supporters that the tie will go ahead as planned.”
Blackburn will be looking to bounce back from their poor display at Stamford Bridge when they take on Darren Ferguson’s side at Ewood Park with Rovers aiming to make it into the quarter-finals of a competition they last won back in 2002.
This year Rovers are on offer at 25/1 to repeat that success while Peterborough are available as 100/1 outsiders in the outright winners market.
