Wayne Rooney has told nervous supporters he will be match fit for the start of England’s World Cup campaign against USA on June 13 in Rustenburg (1/2 England 5/2 draw 5/1 USA – match betting).
The 34-goal Manchester United striker (9/1 World Cup top goalscorer) raised alarm bells when he signalled to go off 13 minutes from the end of his side’s last-day drubbing of Stoke at Old Trafford last Sunday.
However, the 24-year-old revealed he did not want to make a minor problem worse by staying on with the game effectively over as a contest.
Rooney, who was presented with the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award on Thursday, insisted he will be ready for the big kick-off in South Africa and will have no qualms about taking on the mantle of England’s goal-getter.
“I’m fine. I went off on Sunday,” he told Sky Sports News. “The game was won.
“My groin hadn’t been right. For a few weeks it was tight. There was no need for me to continue in the game.”
He added: “I feel good now. I’m fine. I need to get a few more training sessions in before I play but that’ll come when we meet up.”
