Harry Redknapp has aimed a swipe at title rivals Manchester City and Chelsea for their heavy spending and says he is proud Spurs are in the mix at the top of the Premier League (Surs 7/1 Outright) without splashing too much cash.
Redknapp’s men are very much in the title picture this season and moved level on points with Manchester United following the 2-0 win over Everton in midweek while they sit just three behind current leaders City.
Unlike the Eastlands outfit, however, Spurs have not spent millions and millions on their whole squad and Redknapp says he is delighted they have shown they can compete with the best on a tighter budget.
“City are where they are because of Sheikh Mansour and Chelsea thanks to Roman Abramovich,” he said in his column in The Sun.
“We have not done it that way and it makes me proud. You don’t have to go out and spend fortunes to find good players.
“Spurs are not third in the Premier League because someone has walked through the door at White Hart Lane and slapped a bundle of money on my desk.
“City can pay players £200,000 a week, it’s unbelievable. The people running Spurs have invested wisely.”
Spurs can go level at the top on Saturday if they can beat Wolves (Spurs 2/7, Wolves 10/1, draw 9/2 – match prices) with City not in action until Monday, and Redknapp is pleased how his squad have gelled despite the fact some of his recent purchases have not exactly been high profile.
“Some of the players we brought in raised eyebrows, like Younes Kaboul, but he’s made excellent progress. Hopefully it is coming together now,” he added.
