Pellegrini eyes fast start

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini says he and his new players have “no time” to settle in and must begin their Premier League campaign with a result at home to Newcastle on Monday evening (Man City 3/10, draw 9/2, Newcastle 10/1 – Match Betting).

The Chilean is a new arrival at the Etihad Stadium after quitting La Liga outfit Malaga in June to replace Italian Roberto Mancini.

He has spent close to £90million this summer on Fernandinho, Stevan Jovetic, Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo as the Citizens look to snatch the title back from rivals Manchester United (City 2/1 Premier League Outright).

The Red Devils made an impressive start to their campaign, thrashing Swansea 4-1 at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday night to put early pressure on City.

Pellegrini has called on his players to make an immediate impact against Alan Pardew’s Magpies on Monday in order to match their cross city rivals.

“Of course the new players – and the manager and staff – all need to time to get to know each other and I am sure that we will improve as the season progresses but we do not have that time; we have to hit the ground running and that starts against Newcastle,” he told the club’s official website.

“The Premier League can be won by one point and that point can depend on having a squad with strength and depth. Part of my job is to manage the fitness and freshness of the players to give us the best possible chance of winning all those trophies for which we compete.”
