Mikel calls for Cup focus

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has told his team-mates to forget about finishing fourth and focus on completing a Cup double, starting with the FA Cup final on Saturday (Chelsea 4/6, Liverpool 6/5 – FA Cup Outright).

The Blues are 20/1 to finish in the top four after defeat to Newcastle on Wednesday left them four points off fourth-placed Tottenham with two matches left to play.

With a top-four finish looking beyond them the Blues will have to switch their attention to qualifying for next season’s Champions League by winning the final against Bayern Munich on May 19.

The Champions League could be the second part of a Cup double depending on how Saturday’s FA Cup final with Liverpool goes.

The Blues were hugely impressive on their last visit to Wembley, beating Tottenham 5-1 in the semi-finals, and the west London club have won three of the last FA Cup finals at the home of English football.

Mikel has called on Chelsea to forget about how poorly they performed against Newcastle and rediscover their best form for Saturday’s final.

“The top four has gone and now the only chance we have to qualify for the Champions League is to win the final in Munich,” Mikel told reporters.

“That is what everyone at Chelsea wants, the players, supporters and the club. We must concentrate on that.

“But first we have to make sure we win the FA Cup final on Saturday. We can’t let that opportunity pass.”

Mikel is one player expected to keep his place in the starting line-up for the FA Cup final after Roberto Di Matteo rotated his squad, with the likes of Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Juan Mata and Ashley Cole all rested in midweek.
