World Player of the Year Lionel Messi believes he can replicate his form for Barcelona with Argentina in South Africa (Argentina 11/2 to win the World Cup).
Messi put in a decent performance against Nigeria in Argentina’s opening group game (Argentina 2/11 to win Group B), although he was denied a goal by the superb reflexes of Super Eagles keeper Vincent Enyeama.
The Barca superstar now feels the time his right for him to shine on the international stage and he has enjoyed the tournament so far.
Ever since we arrived here, my mentality has changed,” said Messi. “I went through difficult times with the national team when things didn’t come out the way I wanted to.
“I was not only me but also my team-mates. The qualifying round was not good and it wasn’t pleasant to go through that but I’ve stood up and it was great. I really enjoyed the game against Nigeria.”
Some pundits and commentators have questioned whether Argentine coach Diego Maradona is the right man to lead the South American nation to glory but Messi was quick to back the footballing legend.
He added: “Maradona is just another of the group, he gets closer to players. He was a player and knows what happens to us. He gives us a lot of confidence.”
