Mackay delight at defensive steel

Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay has heaped praise on his defenders following Saturday’s clean-sheet victory over Blackpool, as they prepare for Tuesday’s visit of Lee Clark’s Birmingham (Match Betting – Cardiff 10/11, draw 5/2, Birmingham 3/1).

The Bluebirds looked impressive as they coasted to a 3-0 victory over an out-of-form Blackpool and have now moved level on points with Brighton and Wolves at the top of the Championship table (Cardiff 11/2 – Championship outright).

But, while three goals against a team expected to be challenging for promotion would please any coach, Mackay says he takes greater satisfaction from his players’ defensive effort.

“Our defence has been working so hard and it’s good to get another clean sheet, especially against a team like Blackpool,” said Mackay.

“Now and again the forwards get accolades because of goal threats, but I thought my left-back especially, Andrew Taylor, was outstanding. Although I can’t really single him out because the other boys at the back and our goalkeeper are going good as well.”

Victory for Cardiff on Tuesday could take them top of the league if other results go their way, while Birmingham are seeking to build momentum following an impressive 1-0 win away at Brighton (Birmingham 20/1 – Championship outright).

The win was a welcome one for Blues boss Clark, who has endured a tough start to life at St Andrew’s and had suffered an embarrassing 5-0 home reverse against Barnsley just seven days earlier.
