Lennon relishing Moscow mission

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has challenged his players to back up Saturday’s excellent performance against Motherwell when they travel to Russia to face Spartak Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday (Match Betting – Spartak 4/7, draw 3/1, Celtic 11/2).

The Hoops hit two quickfire goals in the first-half to cruise to victory at Fir Park and go a point ahead of Motherwell at the summit of the SPL, with a game in hand.

And now, head coach Lennon has backed his players to replicate their domestic form in Europe and advance past the group stage of the Champions League, though they face tough competition at the round robin stage from Spanish giants Barcelona, Benfica and tomorrow’s opponents Spartak (Spartak 16/1 to win Group G).

“Our performance at the weekend was probably our best of the season. So, if we can build on that going into this game, who knows where that can take us?” said Lennon, who is relishing this week’s trip overseas.

“Our first foray away from home in the group stage is very exciting for the players as it is for the backroom staff. We want to give a good account for ourselves and make the game as competitive as we can.”

A stalemate at home to Benfica in their opening Group G clash was not the result Lennon and his players were hoping for (Benfica 11/1 to win Group G), though a positive result in Russia tomorrow night could breathe life into the club’s ambitions of European advancement.

Benfica host Barca in the other match from Group G on Tuesday evening, with most expecting a second consecutive win for the Spanish side following their 3-2 win over Spartak Moscow (Match Betting – Benfica 5/1, draw 16/5, Barcelona 4/7).
