Kuyt eyes Carling Cup glory

3625180 Dirk Kuyt 300x230 Kuyt eyes Carling Cup gloryStriker Dirk Kuyt admits that the Liverpool players are desperate to bring silverware to Anfield and are looking to win the Carling Cup to ensure they play European football next season (Stoke 11/5, Liverpool 5/4, draw 23/10 Match Prices).

The Reds have not won a trophy since beating West Ham United on penalties to lift the FA Cup back in 2006 and have had to watch as the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and, latterly, Manchester City have dominated the game domestically.

But with the return of Kenny Dalglish as manager and a number of new faces in the squad, there is a real sense of optimism that the current players can secure a trophy this term.

Although the Premier League title may be beyond them this season, they are in touching distance of the top four and the riches and excitement that a season in the Champions League would bring.

There is also the Carling Cup to play for and the Merseyside giants are in action against Stoke City on Wednesday night at the Britannia Stadium (Liverpool 6/1 to win 1-0).

While both sides will doubtless field a few fringe players in the Potteries, the respective managers have said that they are taking the competition seriously and Kuyt has made it clear that the Reds stars are keen to go all the way in the Carling Cup.

“We are desperate to win some silverware,” he said. “Last season was such a disappointment, this one is all about improvement and we can achieve that by doing well in the Carling Cup.

“Not being involved in Europe is a major blow to the club, so the Carling Cup is a great trophy to win.”
