Carrick back for Italy date

Roy Hodgson has included Michael Carrick in a much-changed England squad for next week’s friendly against Italy as well as new-boys Steven Caulker, Jake Livermore and Ryan Bertrand.

In total, 22 men have been included in Hodgson’s squad for Wednesday’s clash in Berne, which has angered some Premier League managers coming just three days before the start of the new domestic season (Man City – 5/4f Outright).

The stand-out name in the party is Manchester United midfielder Carrick, who did not go to Euro 2012 after making himself unavailable for international duty.

He gets another chance in the friendly against the Azzurri, however, after Hodgson revealed he had had a change of heart.

“I was given to believe he didn’t want to be part of the England set-up. He didn’t want to be considered for the Euros, so I reluctantly thought if people are not available they are not available,” the Three Lions boss said.

“He has had discussions with Gary (Neville, England coach) and me since and it turns out that he does want to play. This is an ideal opportunity to invite him to come and play for England again.”

While Carrick is back in, Terry is absent as an FA disciplinary charge hangs over the Chelsea star’s head but his club-mate Bertrand has been named for the first time along with Spurs duo Caulker and Livermore.

Elsewhere, there are recalls for fit-again Gary Cahill, Adam Johnson and Jack Rodwell but skipper Steven Gerrard has been rested, as has Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, Chelsea full-back Ashley Cole and Man City defender Joleon Lescott.

Frank Lampard is in the squad, though, and is likely to be named captain for the game, while Andy Carroll, Theo Walcott and Tom Cleverley will all hope for a chance to impress (England 20/1 to win World Cup 2014).
