Gunners handed Wigan test

Arsenal are favourites to win the Carling Cup after being handed a home tie with Wigan in the quarter-finals of the competition (Arsenal 7/4 to win Carling Cup).

The Gunners’ trophy cabinet has been bare since 2005 and boss Arsene Wenger made it clear that he is taking this year’s competition seriously by fielding a number of first-team stars as the Emirates outfit eased past Newcastle 4-0 in mid-week to book their place in the last eight.

Wenger has traditionally played youth and reserve team players in the Carling Cup but has opted to mix youth and experience so far this campaign.

Holders Manchester United continue their defence with a trip to West Ham United, while the tie of the round sees west Midlands rivals Birmingham and Aston Villa meet at St Andrews for a place in the semi-finals.

The two teams will know each other quite well by the time the fixture comes aound as they are set to face each other in the Premier League on Sunday (Villa 5/6 to beat Birmingham in Premier League).

There is only one non-Premier League side left in the competition and Roy Keane’s Ipswich Town have been drawn at home to West Bromwich Albion, who are flying high in the top flight after an excellent start to the season.

Ipswich are currently 14th in the Championship and so progression to the last four of the Carling Cup would give the East Anglian outfit a confidence boost as they continue their quest to return to the Premier League.

Quarter-finals draw:
Arsenal v Wigan
Birmingham v Aston Villa
West Ham v Manchester United
Ipswich v West Brom
