Ferguson dismisses Rooney fears

8628238 300x204 Ferguson dismisses Rooney fearsSir Alex Ferguson is confident Wayne Rooney will feature heavily in Manchester United‘s Premier League title bid (United 5/2 Premier League – Outright), despite him limping off against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

The Red Devils boss made a shock decision to include Rooney in his starting XI for their Champions League quarter-final second leg at Old Trafford after he picked up an ankle injury in last week’s 2-1 first leg defeat at the Allianz Arena.

The move looked to have paid off when Darron Gibson and Nani’s goals put United two-up inside seven minutes.

However Rooney was left limping again following another challenge on the same ankle, before he was substituted after 55 minutes.

Nani grabbed a second goal to make it 3-0, but United were reduced to ten men when Rafael was sent off for two bookings, while Bayern hit back with goals from Ivica Olic and Arjen Robben to go through on away goals following a 4-4 draw on aggregate.

Following the game Ferguson was left to play down the sevrity of Rooney’s fresh ankle problem and feels he will be back in action soon.

He said: “We will have a look at it.

“I don’t think it is serious. It’s just that tissue and the blood vessel has just burst. I am sure he’ll be fine for the following week.”

Despite Ferguson’s confidence it is unlikely that Rooney will feature in United’s next Premier League match at Blackburn (United 1/2, Blackburn 6/1, draw 3/1 UK Coupon) on Sunday afternoon.
