Ferguson demands right reaction

7647410Sir Alex Ferguson has demanded his Manchester United players show their championship mettle (Man United 9/4 Premier League outright prices) when they entertain Blackburn in the Premier League at Old Trafford next Saturday.

The Scot must first lift his players’ spirits for Tuesday night’s Carling Cup fourth-round clash (Barnsley 6/1, draw 3/1, Man United 1/2 match bets) at Oakwell against folk hero Mark Robins and his Barnsley side when a number of changes are expected.

Michael Owen, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Wes Brown are all expected to be involved and Darren Fletcher could also make his return from a groin injury, while young striker Danny Welbeck might also get a run-out against the Championship side.

Ferguson will be smarting from the manner in which his players failed to match Liverpool’s hunger for a fixture he still regards as the biggest in the domestic calendar, but accepts there is no time to sulk.

“Part of the challenge is how you react to disappointment,” said Ferguson.

He added: “We lost 4-1 to Liverpool at home last season, which was a travesty at the time. But the players buckled down and we went on to win the league.”
