Eidur down to hard work

eidur 300x217 Eidur down to hard workTony Pulis says there is a chance Eidur Gudjohnsen could make his debut for Stoke (4/1 to be relegated in 2010/11) in their Premier League clash with Aston Villa a week on Monday.

The Iceland forward completed a permanent switch to the Britannia Stadium ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline, penning a one-year deal with the Potters.

Pulis says the former Chelsea, Barcelona and Monaco ace will undergo a “mini pre-season in the next 12 days” in an attempt to get his fitness up to peak level.

Should all go according to plan with the 31-year-old, Gudjohnsen is likely to be in the squad for the visit of Villa on September 13.

The Stoke boss stated: “Whether he starts or he’s on the bench will be determined by how hard he works over the next 12 days. He’s a fantastic player and he’ll bring the bit more quality that we want.”

Gudjohnsen was one of four arrivals at Stoke (125/1 for a top-four finish) before the summer transfer window closed, with Jermaine Pennant, Marc Wilson and Salif Diao signing up.

Diao arrives back at the Britannia on new terms having run out of contract at the end of last season, while Pennant joins on loan and Wilson has cost £1.5m from Portsmouth (25/1 to be promoted from the Championship) with Liam Lawrence and David Kitson moving in the opposite direction.
