Di Matteo ready for Euro sacrifice

Roberto Di Matteo says his Chelsea players are ready to do “whatever it takes” to reach the FA Cup final, even if it hurts their chances of Champions League success (Chelsea 7/4, Spurs 13/8, draw 23/10 – Match Betting).

The Blues face London rivals Tottenham on Sunday in the second FA Cup semi-final at the start of what could be a season-defining week for Di Matteo’s team.

Chelsea’s hopes of silverware could be dashed depending on how the next four days play out, with a Champions League semi-final first leg with Barcelona to come on Wednesday night.

The Blues are 3/1 to get the better of European champions Barcelona in midweek, with the visitors 8/11 and the draw 5/2.

With extra time and penalties a possibility on Sunday it could take a superhuman effort by Chelsea to maintain their dream of a double.

Given Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s desire to see his team lift the Champions League trophy some might think the FA Cup semi-final with Tottenham will play second fiddle to Wednesday’s game with Barca.

However, Di Matteo says he is desperate to make sure Chelsea reach the FA Cup final and claims European success is at the back of his players’ minds.

“Whatever it takes for us to reach the final, we will do,” he said.

“We’re not going to throw anything away, absolutely not.

“Nobody will have Barcelona at the back of their minds. We are going to be focused on the FA Cup on Sunday, to try and reach the final.”

Di Matteo looks likely to deliver on his words when it comes to risking John Terry and Ashley Cole, both of whom look set to play through the pain barrier in the quest for FA Cup glory.
