Di Matteo eager to get into battle

Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo is relishing the prospect of playing so many big games as he prepares to face Newcastle United on Wednesday just three days before Saturday’s FA Cup final (Chelsea 8/15, Newcastle 11/2, draw 16/5 – Match Prices).

FA Cup final opponents Liverpool crashed to another home defeat on Tuesday but, in truth, had little to play for, but the Blues cannot afford to take their foot off the pedal as the race to finish in the top four looks set to go down to the wire.

The west Londoners may well gain entry into next year’s Champions League by winning this year’s event as they face German giants Bayern Munich in the final at the Allianz Arena on May 19 (Bayern 4/5, Chelsea 4/1, draw 5/2 – Match Prices).

But they cannot rely on that and will want to make sure of a top-four finish to earn the right to participate again next season.

Spurs currently occupy fourth place with the Magpies in fifth, but three points for Chelsea in midweek could see them leapfrog the pair depending on how Tottenham get on at Bolton.

With that in mind, the Italian tactician looks set to field strong team against Alan Pardew’s men but may well rest a few of his stars for the Wembley clash against the Reds.

Chelsea have been a different side under Di Matteo and won universal praise for the way in which they dealt with Barcelona over two legs.

And the interim manager believes it is the togetherness of his men both on and off the field that has helped achieve recent success, and he is looking forward to the prospect of playing so many high-profile games between now and the end of the campaign.

“There’s a good spirit at the moment in the dressing room and that’s connected to the positive results we’ve been getting lately,” he said.

“There is not much time between the games and it’s challenging but it’s also exciting because we have lots to play for and it’s better to be like this than not have any targets.”
