Calls for Toshack to quit Wales

Iwan Roberts and Robbie Savage both believe the 61-year-old should step down following Friday’s 1-0 defeat in the opening Euro 2012 qualifier in Montenegro.

Mickey Thomas stopped short of demanding Toshack’s head, but said Ryan Giggs might be an option for the Wales job (Wales 750/1 to win Euro 2012).

The attack from Savage might have been expected, given that the player infamously quit international football after a row with Toshack five years ago.

The Derby midfielder told the BBC: “It is time John Toshack left Wales. I think we need a fresh start, fresh impetus.

“We need to get the crowds back and I think Toshack has to go. He has made enough excuses, he has been in the job six years.

“Judge him on his qualifying campaigns – they haven’t qualified yet and they have got off to a terrible start again. Toshack has to go.”

Roberts said anything less than a victory over Bulgaria in their next game would leave Toshack with no future in his post.

“Our optimism is gone in one game, I don’t think there were any positives,” Roberts told the BBC.

“Toshack has taken the squad as far as he can. He’s been with them since November 2006 and have we progressed? I’m not too sure.

“I would say his position is untenable if we lose to Bulgaria, we have to get six points from the next two games.”

Former Wales midfielder Mickey Thomas said: “If Bulgaria doesn’t go well then the pressure mounts and maybe his time is up.

“Only two men could change things around quickly – Ryan Giggs and [Wales Under-21 manager] Brian Flynn, that combination could get the Welsh team going.”
