A crestfallen Roger Federer vowed he would not let his shock French Open defeat by Robin Soderling affect the remainder of his 2010 campaign (7/5 Federer – Men’s Wimbledon 2010 outright).
The world number one and defending champion was humbled 3-6 6-3 7-5 6-4 by his Swedish opponent, just 12 months after Soderling sent shockwaves around Roland Garros by sending clay-court specialist Rafael Nadal packing (9/2 Soderling – French Open 2010 outright).
Nadal could profit this time around by winning a fifth French Open crown and taking Federer’s status as the top player in the men’s game.
Federer, who was on a run of 23 successive Grand Slam semi-final appearances, said he would deal with his exit in a positive way and look for the perfect response.
The 28-year-old said: “You just take the defeat as it is – you don’t think of the consequences. I am most disappointed that I can’t defend my title here.
“I really felt like my tennis was good enough to come here and do it again, but that was not the case.”
