Roger Federer, 9/4 favourite to win the tournament, is through to the second round of the Australian Open, but dropped the opening set of his first-round win over Igor Andreev.
The world number one, a three-time champion in Melbourne, looked to be in trouble when he lost the first set 4-6, but Federer bounced back to win the next three, 6-2 7-6 6-0.
The Swiss ace insisted afterwards that he expected a tough test against a player who has three ATP tournament victories to his name, and admitted he was relieved to progress.
Federer said: “I knew it was going to be tough. We played five sets in New York two years ago. All in all I’m very happy with my performance.”
The 15-time Grand Slam champion is drawn to face sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko (8/1 to win the title in Australia) in the quarter final, with the Russian beginning with a 6-1 6-0 6-3 victory over German qualifier Dieter Kindlmann.
