Fed eyes further success

8945945 300x200 Fed eyes further successRoger Federer admitted he is as hungry as ever to win titles after moving into the third round of the Rogers Cup with a straight sets victory over Juan Ignacio Chela in Toronto. (Fed 3/1 to win Rogers Cup)

Having lost his US Open title to Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro in 2009, the 16-time Grand Slam winner beat Andy Murray to claim the Australian Open early this year, but failed to reach the semi-finals at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

The Swiss ace has spent six weeks away from tennis after sensationally crashing out of Wimbledon at the quarter-final stage to Tomas Berdych.

But he is now back and raring to go, with the start of this year’s US Open at Flushing Meadows now just a few weeks away.

The former world number one struggled early on in his match with the Argentine star on Tuesday but he was too good for the South American in the second and ran out a 7-6 (9-7) 6-3 winner.

Federer was pleased with his opening effort in Canada and admitted that he would love to achieve even more success before finally calling time on his career. (Fed 3/1 to win US Open)

“It was a good match,” he said. “It’s normal that you’re rusty after six weeks.

“There’s many things I’d like to do but I’m not going to say my career is incomplete if I don’t get to it. I’d love to win another 10 Wimbledons, another five French Opens, an Olympic gold in London, a Davis Cup and whatever – you name it.”
