Whitlock staying low key

Simon Whitlock (6/1 – 2014 PDC World Championship outright) put on a dominant display to defeat Kevin Painter and seal his place in the quarter-finals of the World Championships, but he is hoping that he doesn’t attract too much attention.

‘The Wizard’ coasted to a comfortable 4-0 victory in 37 minutes to book a tie with Ian White at Alexandra Palace tonight. The Australian thrower is the only man yet to drop a set in this year’s tournament, boasting an 11 out of 11 record.

The 44-year-old reached the final of the competition four years ago in his first season on the PDC circuit and he is keen to go all the way once again.

However, he will face a tough test against White (Match Betting – White 9/4, Whitlock 1/3) who showed great character to come back from 3-1 down to beat Richie Burnett 4-3.

Whitlock is the highest seed left in the top half of the draw now that Phil Taylor has departed and hopes that he can continue building momentum.

Whitlock said: “I don’t really want to be the favourite in my half of the draw.

“Phil Taylor was the favourite and he’s out now. I just want to be left alone!

“That said, I know my experience is helping me. When I am up there on that stage, I think to myself, ‘You made the final in 2010 – do what you do best’.”
