Taylor eyes World Championship glory

Phil Taylor15710525Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor (7/4 – PDC World Darts Championship 2015 outright) has set his sights on becoming world champion next year after lifting the World Matchplay trophy.

Taylor marked a return to form over the weekend as he picked up a seventh successive World Matchplay title, and 15th overall, in Blackpool by beating world number one Michael van Gerwen 18-9 in the final.

‘Mighty Mike’ (9/4 – PDC World Darts Championship 2015 outright) has replaced ‘The Power’ at the top of the rankings after being crowned world champion in January but was unable to cope with the Stoke great’s stunning performance on Sunday.

Taylor, a 14-time world champion, now wants the top spot back and is eager to maintain his winning ways going into the second half of 2014, with his eye on December’s World Championship.

“Last week in Blackpool was great for me and I want to kick on from here now,” Taylor told the PDC’s official website. “I want to get back to world number one again and to win back the World Championship.

“That’s not because people had been writing me off, but I want to prove to myself that I can do it once more.

“The World Matchplay’s massive and it’s fantastic to have won it again. I’m a very ambitious player and I want to win everything I enter, and I’m going to keep setting targets.

“I want to keep winning and keep setting records so that these young people coming through have something to aim for.”

Taylor, 53, won his only world title in the last four years in 2013 when he beat Van Gerwen in the final.
