MVG staying focused

Michael van GerwenMichael Van Gerwen insists he will put personal friendship aside when he faces Vincent van der Voort in the first round of the World Grand Prix on Tuesday (Van Gerwen 1/8, Van der Voort 5/1 – Match Prices).

The two Netherlands throwers are set to square off in Dublin with the winner scheduled to meet either Michael Smith or Dean Winstanley in round two (Smith 4/9, Winstanley 7/4 – Match Prices).

Van Gerwen is looking to gain the initiative over rival Phil Taylor once more and would love to reclaim the title he won in 2012, with ‘The Power’ winning his 11th crown in the Emerald Isle 12 months ago.

Standing in his way in round one will be his 38-year-old compatriot and ‘Mighty Mike’ admitted that, despite the fact that they are best mates, it will be business as usual for both men when they toe the oche at the Citywest Hotel.

“He’s been my best man at the wedding and now I’m playing him in the first round,” he told Sky Sports.

“But we both are professional and we know what to do, and we just need to do our own thing and play our own game.”

Another Dutch master in action on Tuesday is five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld but it is open to question how far the big man will go this year.

He plays last year’s beaten finalist Dave Chisnall in round one and has already made it clear that his form is not where he would like it to be going into a major event (Van Barneveld – 22/1 Outright Betting).
